Tempranillo
Spain, Rioja Baja
In the northeast of Spain, not a million miles away from Pamplona – famed for the fiesta where bulls charge through the ancient city streets in memory of San Fermin.
2019
Rubén Pérez, the winemaker for Artesa, is a craftsman with very high standards. Luckily for him, Artesa have hillside vineyards in the best zones of Rioja Baja, so Rubén only has to work with the very best ingredients. The organic vineyards are located in some of Artesa's best high altitude sites.
The organic vineyards are great sites with mature vines and poor stony soils. Mature vines produce few grapes meaning the flavours are concentrated into the grapes they do produce. Poor soils mean the vines have to "branch out" to find the nutrients required to grow the grapes and as a result their water retention is regulated better. This means the grapes are again more concentrated with flavour and less watery than those from good quality soil. Once produced the wine is aged for six months in american oak barrels.
This wine pairs well with casseroles red meats and manchego cheese.
